Area campers are "chiholidazing" starting Father's Day
SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan., June, 14, 2004 – 60 children and young adults from the Kansas City Metro area, Topeka, Lawrence and several surrounding cities are getting “Chiholidazed” at the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Camp Chihowa this week – June 20-25 in Perry, Kan.
This Father’s Day, campers will be ringing in the New Year with a board game tournament and a sparkling grape juice toast. This week celebrations also include Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, the Fourth of July and Halloween.
As they “celebrate,” campers will be participating in a wide range of activities especially designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs. At Camp Chihowa, there will be holiday-related crafts, tye-dying, and crafting of stepping stone paperweights.
Patrick Millet, 16, of Kansas City, Mo. will be attending camp for the 11th time this summer. “My favorite camp activities are the sports,” Millet said. “I always look forward to talking with people and seeing all of my friends.” Patrick’s two older siblings, his cousin and a close friend also volunteer at camp for the week.
According to Mary Millet, Patrick’s mother, “camp is the highlight of the year –
it’s a tradition in our family, and it’s been the talk of the house for months.”
Another special aspect of Camp Chihowa is that it always begins around Father’s Day. “Father’s Day and MDA camp go together,” Dave Millet, Patrick’s father, said. “So, we usually celebrate it early – Patrick looks forward to camp, so it’s great.”
Camp Chihowa will also be honored to have several special guests during the week, which include riders from Topeka’s Harley Davidson and the Kansas City Wizards. For the St. Patrick’s Day festivities on Tuesday, June 22, fire fighters from the Lawrence/Douglas Country Fire Department will continue to celebrate the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) 50th anniversary with MDA by arriving in their green fire truck.
